The regulations are flexible in terms of the student’s right to appeal to a panel where issues arise and it was felt that this could be of use in terms of a variety of equality issues. This might include people with disabilities who find fulfilling the criteria of their award programme difficult, or for people of faith who find themselves being unable to meet time-bound criteria if the date was during a religious festival or celebration. In both cases, students would be able to seek assistance/exception from the University Research Committee with the support and assistance of their supervisor. Mode of attendance was also highlighted as a potential source of negative impact but all awards offer the ability to change from full-time to part-time or vice versa at any time, fee payment is operated pro-rata. Whilst there is a system in place to deal with equality issues that arise as a result of research regulations, this does not come across clearly from reading the documentation. One recommendation might be to include a statement in one section which stipulates student’s rights in this regard.
